Charles first joined our group of 50 friends in 2013 to share our annual residential Cwtch weekend on Gower, South Wales. His wry sense of humour, friendly personality and willingness to share every aspect of the weekend immediately won all our hearts. Charles along with Elizabeth came to many of our weekends, we will all miss him greatly. I met Charles through my father, whom he was great friends with. I had conversations with Charles about many topics from the mundane to the esoteric and always thoroughly enjoyed them. If there were more people like Charles the world would be a merrier place.

Charles was a lovely, interesting, gregarious and genuine man. I had very interesting conversations with him on the Big Lemon bus walks and holidays. He was extremely kind to me when I got frightened of heights on the walks. He had a very special relationship with Elizabeth and I really enjoyed spending time with the two of them as well. I'm sad that he is no longer with us.

For over five years Charles was a very good neighbour to us, later becoming a trusted and valued friend. We greatly appreciated his quiet humour, integrity and wisdom - Google never being required if he was around! His total lack of any pretence and calm acceptance and contentment with the simple things of life was a lesson to us all. He has left a large gap in our life at Wells, but his imparted knowledge, always delivered with the lightest of touches, together with pleasant memories of undemanding times, will remain with us. Thank you Charles.

Charles was such a fun, warm and fascinating character. He will be missed. I always enjoyed chats with him, which inevitably ended down an unexpected rabbit hole. Charles loved learning and experimenting. He once told me he had been learning how to cut hair and I agreed to let him cut mine in the hardware lab. It wasn’t entirely successful. I asked where he was learning - he said he had borrowed a book from the library. All was not lost though. The cut was so bad my family paid for a professional haircut when I went home. Result! Thank you for so many memories Charles.

Charles was a true "one off". Who else can I ask why my CD player, hole punch, shoelaces etc. don't work and get a kind thoughtful answer with a smile and a twinkle in the eye? My life is richer for knowing you Charles, thank you. You will be truly missed. Rest in Peace.

My abiding memory of Charles was lunchtimes in the Computer Center Hardware department of Brighton Uni., where he was the manager, and witnessing Charles' love of leaving a banana on the window ledge to cook in the sun until it went black and soggy inside, then opening it with gusto and eating it with a spoon! That and many interesting, funny and sometimes surreal conversations. You will be missed, Charles. R.I.P.

Charles was clever, kind, intelligent, timid (he said as much) and modest. Skilled at fixing things (anything from a dripping tap or a squeaky door to watches and washing machines) he never thought the kind help he gave people was worthy of any consideration. When people expressed their gratitude he couldn't understand how they could possibly value the "very small thing" he had done to help them. He had similar trouble accepting that he had friends or that anyone might actually like him. Bless him
