Charles was clever, kind, intelligent, timid (he said as much) and modest. Skilled at fixing things (anything from a dripping tap or a squeaky door to watches and washing machines) he never thought the kind help he gave people was worthy of any consideration. When people expressed their gratitude he couldn't understand how they could possibly value the "very small thing" he had done to help them. He had similar trouble accepting that he had friends or that anyone might actually like him. Bless him
